Dr. Maura L. Gillison, M.D., Ph.D. has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine 2016. Dr. Gillison is the Jeg Coughlin Chair of Cancer Biology, Epidemiology and Otolaryngology, at The Ohio State University. Dr. Gillison has made distinguished contributions to the fields of cancer biology, therapy and epidemiology. She is recognized for establishing the causal link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and a subset of head and neck cancers. Her findings led the International Association for Research on Cancer to formally recognize HPV16 as a significant cause of oropharync cancers. Gillison completely revolutionized the fields of head and neck cancer therapy and epidemiology of HPV infection and associated diseases.
